The Peer Support Specialist is an active member of the clinical team and provides peer support services to clients within a program servicing military veterans and their families.  The Peer Support Specialist will function as a role model to peers; exhibiting competency in the use of coping skills and in navigating and accessing supportive resources when needed, and serve as a client advocate.  The Peer Support Specialist performs a wide range of tasks to assist peers of all ages, from young adult to old age, including support with therapeutic goals and linkage to services to assist with meeting a client's concrete needs in a wide variety of areas, such as gaining employment, education, housing, and establishment and engagement with social supports.

 

To be successful in this position you must become able to do the following essential duties and responsibilities always:

  • Teach and role model the value of the therapeutic process by collaborating with the clinical staff to work with the client on achieving therapy goals.
  • Assist clients in developing empowerment skills and combating stigma through self-advocacy.
  • Assist clients in articulating personal goals sessions, where Peer Support Specialists will support clients in creating goals and adhering to their treatment plans with the skills, strengths, supports and resources to aid them in achieving those goals.
  • In collaboration with the therapist, assist clients in determining the steps clients need to take in order to achieve their goals.
  • Serves as care manager for clients with wide array of concrete needs (employment, housing, education, social support, etc)
  • Educate patient and family/caregiver(s) about relevant community resources
  • Completes and submits accurate reports and chart documentation in a complete and timely manner according to program guidelines and established procedures.
  • Ensures the quality and accuracy of written and verbal communications.
  • Other duties as required

  • Meets with the supervisor in accordance with program and licensing requirements.
  • Utilizes supervision effectively to address client related issues.
  • Utilizes supervision effectively to address performance issues and concerns.
  • Utilizes supervision effectively to explore professional development and training needs.

 

Program Quality Requirements

  • Meets obligations of program (contractual, licensing, Medicaid, etc.).
  • Follows program policies and procedures and encourages the same in others.
  • Educates self on issues impacting the program population.
  • Operates conscientiously in accordance with program budget (i.e., use of client engaging funds, office supplies).
  • Completes and submits accurate written reports and documentation per established guidelines.
  • Ensures the quality and accuracy of written and verbal communications.
  • Submits Level of Service (LOS) within program requirements.
  • Attends agency and program meetings and training within established time frames.
  • Plays an active role in meetings and training designed to enhance agency and program operations.

 

Client Interaction Requirements

  • Provides culturally competent service delivery.
  • Upholds ethical standards in accordance with the Social Work Code of Ethics.
  • Effectively engages all client populations.
  • Continually assesses clients' needs.
  • Provides appropriate intervention strategies and adjusts services accordingly.

 

Necessary Skills and Abilities

  • Must demonstrate initiative, creativity, be dependable, reliable and work well independently.
  • Must be able to exercise independent thinking and good judgment under all circumstances.
  • Must be able to analyze work, set goals, develop plans and utilize time effectively and efficiently.
  • Must regularly be able to see, speak and hear.  Frequently required to stand, sit, walk, bend, use hands and arms and must occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be sensitive, flexible and responsive to gender, race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, age, sexual orientation or any other special needs as reflected in the ability to communicate with staff and/or clients.
  • Assume an active role in agency events.

 

To qualify for this job you need to have the below minimum requirements and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • The position is a peer support specialist for a program that serves military veterans and their families. The applicant must have a military background and have other than Dishonorable Discharge from any branch of the US Armed Forces.
  • Additional background in psychology, social work, or case management preferred.
  • Must relate well to others.
  • Strong work ethic; comfortable working independently.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license, use of an insured vehicle and an acceptable driving record.
